Day 9

Friday 16th April 2004

When we left the Rosebank Hotel one of our cars had a puncture. We yet again missed the early morning Assembly. We spent some of the morning going to classes with the South African Students. Afterwards we went to Soweto to visit Winnie Ngwegazi Primary School where we were made more than welcome are were taken a tour of some of the classes. We were also treated to recital given by the excellent school choir.

We then did a whistle stop tour Soweto and visited Nelson Mandela’s house as well as Archbishop Desmond Tutu's house. We then had lunch at Wandie’s restaurant that had a buffet, which included many traditional South African dishes.

After filling our stomachs we then visited the Hector Peterson museum. Hector's sister, Antoinette, was behind the entrance desk and sold us our tickets. The visit was a very moving experience and both Scots and South Africans were touched by the experience.

When we got back to the hotel we all met in the lobby of the hotel to see off Mr. Birnie and Ms. Warden. Ms. Warden gave us all a very tearful speech about how much she had enjoyed herself and for us to make the most of our time left in South Africa. Mr O’Neil got them lost again (he couldn’t count the robots!!). When they arrived at the airport their flight was overbooked and a very happy Ms. Warden returned to the Rosebank hotel for an extra day in South Africa.
