Being near the end of our trip, we had to go to a sort of ‘goodbye South Africa’ meeting at the British
Council Offices.
Before that, though, we had to go and put ourselves through the hideous task of visiting a Theme Park.
Aah, Gold Reef City.
It was a dull day, slightly grey and more than a little damp, but luckily this cleared up within half an hour.
Because of the weather, however, this meant that there were almost no people in the park apart from us. In the
queue for the huge Anaconda, the upside - down, topsy - turvy, corkscrew roller coaster, there was nobody waiting. You could
go on it then run back round again and be there in time for the next round!
There were other rides as well, including ‘The Miner’s Revenge’, which only the bravest went
on. That particular one was very similar to ‘Oblivion’ in Alton Towers!
Among the rest of the rides was one called ‘The Golden Loop’, a simple loop that you were fired up
into. You went upside down, and then the speed that the loop gave you pushed you up a steep incline. Then it all happened
again. Backwards.
As well as all the terrifyingly scary rides, there were also tamer attractions. There were small areas separate
from the rest, like ‘The Victorian Park’, which had teacups and a Viking ship. There were also swings, which some
of us wanted to go on but couldn’t quite fit into the seats…
Apart from even these, were things like stalls selling only doughnuts, stalls selling drinks, and other ones, which
looked as though they were about to collapse under the weight of all the sweets on them.
Unfortunately, we had to leave early to go to the British Council Meeting.
There, we were served lunch and we also had a video link with the pupils back in Scotland. These pupils were our
friends who had said they would stay behind to talk to us over the video link.
